Very often we are talking about silos and we mean the different IT departments (SAP admin, systems admin, storage admin, network admin, backup & recovery admin, security, …). Whilst we can overcome this with the Software-defined Data Center approach, there is another type of silo with room for improvement: application silos. In the SAP silo we are thinking about In-Memory, Dynamic Tiering, SAP IQ etc and sometimes we forget that more and more customers are building Data Lakes in the petabyte space. For that reason I think it’s a good idea to look beyond our own (SAP) nose to understand the challenges of the Big Data guys.
The potential of Big Data is massive, but, building Data Lakes and enabling Big Data analytics is hard for IT organizations. They have to map the right analytics use case to the right analytics platform and the right underlying storage. It all has to be deployed and configured together. To address these needs, EMC has announced the engineered Federation Business Data Lake solution.
The solution is built on Federation technology. Layered on top is the Pivotal Big Data Suite, fully virtualized on VMware and running on Vblocks. Pivotal CloudFoundry provides the modern application platform for building next generation applications on top of the Data Lake. The Data Lake Storage Foundation is Isilon and ECS.
