No doubt about it – IaaS is the foundation for the 2nd and 3rd platform of IT and a prerequisite for PaaS. We are enabling users and developers to easily consume IT and business services. In order to achieve this, we are implementing the Software-Defined Data Center and started coupling different clouds. This leads to the following questions: How do I run a true-hybrid cloud and how do I get there? And how can I run critical SAP workloads on top of it?
You can find answers to those and many more questions with the help of the EMC Hybrid Cloud (EHC) for SAP Solution that was launched at VMworld 2014 in San Francisco.
Connect private and public clouds under IT control, and expose all services through a portal governed by usage policies. As a result, delivery of infrastructure, applications and even desktop services happens at business speed, reaching the next level of IT efficiency and reducing time to cloud value.
This means, that CIOs will increasingly become brokers of a portfolio of SAP applications and IT services across a well run hybrid cloud with SAP workloads potentially running:
- On-premises in a private cloud
- Off – premises in a virtual private cloud (VPC) as managed IT with SAP system integrator or service provider and/or,
- Off-premises in a public cloud such as VMware vCloud Air and Amazon Web Services
SOLUTION BUILDING BLOCKS
The solution is based on the best ingredients from EMC, VMware and SAP. VMware vCloud Suite together with EMC ViPR combines server, network and storage into a complete set of cloud infrastructure capabilities to provide virtualization, software-defined data center services, policy-based provisioning, disaster recovery, application management, and operations management. Key attributes include:
- Open Architecture (x86 Intel Based)
- SAP Supported DBs / OS’s
- Off-premise Cloud Extensibility
The foundation is prerequisite component upon which all extensions are based. Running in a single site, it delivers basic cloud-ready functions for SAP including:
- Self-service and automation
- Metering and chargeback
With the Foundation in place, you can seamlessly integrate the bundled extensions to expand automation, operations and protection for SAP systems and data.
Extensions provide incremental solution bundles for automating and managing SAP landscapes and enhanced service levels for business continuity assurance.
- Operating and Managing SAP Landscapes
- Enhanced SAP Security & compliance
- High Availability and Data Protection
Paths to deployment include:
- Converged Infrastructure – lower risk through preconfigured and optimized server, storage and network to provide a “ready to go” datacenter in a box
- Build Your Own (BYO) – cost efficient, flexible
- VSPEX – blueprint-like solution to build based on EMC’s tested and confirmed recipe with the right building blocks
The EMC Hybrid Cloud for SAP foundation empowers an IT organization by automating and orchestrating otherwise manual processes in terms of administration, multitenancy, security, self-service provisioning, migration, monitoring, and chargeback.
EMC Hybrid Cloud for SAP offers users a range of cloud operations, including:
- A catalog of SAP applications
- A catalog of storage and data protection services
- Streamlined deployment of SAP applications
- On-demand virtual machine-level backup, restore, and billing operations
VMware vCloud Automation Center (vCAC) is the core cloud administration component of EHC for SAP providing a secure portal where authorized administrators, developers, or business users can request new IT services.
Multitenancy, resource scaling, and chargeback
With IT servicing various business units and functions requiring IT resources for SAP, a multitenant model isolates the business data and resources consumed by an organizational entity. This enables cloud administrators to gain control of service performance, cost, and vendors important to managing IT as a business.
Through vCAC, uses this model to structure its computing, storage, and network resource pooling, service measurement, and chargeback.
Current physical network and security solutions are rigid, complex, and expensive. Provisioning is slow and workload placement/mobility is limited by physical topology.
VMware NSX reproduces the entire network model in software, enabling a library of logical networking elements and services, such as logical switches, routers, firewalls, VPN, and workload security.
With VMware vCloud Automation Center, a user can provide even very complex SAP systems with just a one request click to be ready for logon in minutes.
Enabled with SAP unattended installation mode used side-by-side with VMware vCloud Application Director, is a fully customizable, fully automated installation right from storage provisioning, virtual machine creation, SAP system installation, to a logon-ready SAP system.
EMC Hybrid Cloud allows you to import a non-EMC Hybrid Cloud SAP virtual machine from another environment, and “standardize” it to become an EMC Hybrid Cloud compatible virtual machine.
Health monitoring and root cause analysis
EMC Hybrid Cloud uses VMware vCenter Operations Manager (vC Ops) and EMC ViPR SRM to monitor the whole platform granularly, from application through the hypervisor, all the way to the storage array, even to the spindle. vCOPS provides all performance related information and data from an SAP-specific context to provide the right aspect.
vCOps’ customizable dashboard reveals at a glance which virtual machines need attention, and allows administrators to countercheck SAP-level key performance indicators (KPIs), such as those found in Memory management (ST02) or Workload Monitor (ST03N), without having to log into the SAP system.
Automation and Operations
For customers who have adopted SAP Landscape Virtualization Manager (LVM) as part of their IT strategy for SAP, this bundle is well suited for automated operations with SAP LVM as part of EHC for SAP.
SAP LVM software helps companies cut costs and improve agility by automating common SAP system administration tasks as depicted in the diagram below.
Providing a central point of control and extensive automation, SAP LVM gives administrators a single-console view of the status and performance of their entire SAP application landscape and underlying infrastructure.
Key Components *
- SAP LVM
- EMC ESI adaptor
- EMC VNX or VAX
Enhanced Security and Compliance
Ensuring high levels of access control and security for change and audit control is key for customers. This bundle addresses the challenges of centralizing and consolidating governance, risk, and controls information from SAP and non-SAP applications into a single repository to support ongoing compliance activities.
- SAP GRC for SAP Systems
- RSA Archer for non-SAP Systems
- Integration for Unified GRC
Disaster avoidance is a key consideration in today’s modern business continuity strategies for SAP cloud infrastructures stretched across distances. EMC’s bundle for mission-critical SAP high availability helps eliminate single points of failure (SPOF) including single datacenter outage by extending high availability across metro distances and provides application mobility enabling non-disruptive movement of running SAP workloads seamlessly across servers or datacenters.
- EMC VPLEX Metro
- VMware vMotion
- VMware DRS
- VMware HA
- SAP application aware component (example Symantec HA)
It will only take one extended downtime to cause irrevocable loss for many businesses.
The DR bundle automates processes, policies, and procedures related to preparing for recovery or continuation of SAP systems and data availability that are vital to an organization after a natural or human-induced disaster. Additionally it protects from functional errors through back-in-time capability and full SAP landscape protection with consistency groups.
- EMC RecoverPoint
- VMware SRM
With the exponential growth of SAP system landscapes and data in a private cloud, backup and recovery traditional solutions challenge IT administrators.
The Data Protection bundle provides next-generation backup and recovery protection for SAP with high-speed deduplication and offsite replication for all backups.
