The IT industry is going through a huge change. Key trends that are driving this change are cloud, mobile, social and big data. This is driving IT to what IDC calls the 3rd platform of IT. The first platform was around mainframe, second about client/server computing, and the third platform is a new era that we believe is going to be driven by mobile devices.
The third platform is fundamentally different in terms of the number of users accessing data as well as the number of applications that are being run on the platform. Well it is orders of magnitude different in terms of scale. Billions of user and millions of applications. It’s fundamentally different from anything that we’ve seen before.
Challenge number 1 is to manage the data explosion. Therefore there is a need of a data layer as a programmatic virtual resource in the software-defined data center. Data temperatures (hot, warm, cold) and types (block, file, object, HDFS) must be be delivered as a service.
The second tough nut to crack is to find the right way to the well-run hybrid cloud. The figure below may look very simple, however if you drill down in the different topics you will quickly see that there is a lot of work behind. The CIO is becoming a broker of IT services and defines a policy based governance. Self service becomes a matter of course and an automated delivery deploys applications from huge application libraries.
Really great times to work on these topics with customers, partners, SAP and the EMC federation (EMC, Pivotal, RSA, VCE, Vmware)!
