If, for whatever reason, a turn-key, converged infrastructure solution is not the way how you want to build your cloud data center, but you are still looking for an easy to implement, flexible and proven solution: here it is. I have the pleasure to work with a fantastic team on this. We’ve started our work in October 2012 and are now publishing the entire solution. The EMC Cloud-Enabled Infrastructure (CEI) for SAP solution is a result of the preferred 3-way partnership between EMC, SAP, and VMware.
The solution was completely designed based on the Fundamental Characteristics of a Cloud Data Center (as described in my first post here) and supports the essential characteristics of a cloud solution, as defined by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
For a flexible, modular implementation, the solution comes in a bundled approach, as shown in the graphic below. In a first step you will setup the (mandatory) foundation. EMC’s Cloud-enabled Infrastructure for SAP foundation solution provides a simple and efficient multitenant cloud infrastructure model for SAP systems. It also provides complete end-to-end infrastructure management and shared compute and storage resources. This enables efficient resource pooling which helps in the reduction of total cost of ownership (TCO) and improves customer return on investment (ROI). The solution can be located onsite at customer data centers or offsite in a cloud provider data center. The Cloud-enabled Infrastructure for SAP foundation delivers:
- A virtual data center for SAP
- Infrastructure chargeback
- Integrated cloud management and performance analysis
- Storage tiering
- Cloud networking and security for SAP
The foundation bundle provides the framework to which all the enhancement bundles can be added. The add-on bundles, such as high availability and application mobility, SAP automation and operations, data protection, disaster recovery, and enhanced security and compliance can be added according to your needs.
The bundled approach allows a degree of flexibility in choosing how you implement your cloud data center for SAP. For example, you could implement all available bundles at once in a ‘big bang’ project. Alternatively, you could start with the foundation bundle along with the SAP High Availability and Application Mobility bundle. Then, when the time is right for you, you could add Backup and Recovery for SAP.
On the EMC Cloud-Enabled Infrastructure (CEI) for SAP landing page you will find a business white paper, reference architectures for the VNX and VMAX storage platforms as well as technical white papers for the CEI bundles. In my next post I’m planning to introduce the business white paper before I will take a closer look on architecture, technology and use cases, as described in the above mentioned documents. I’m sure this will also be interesting for those of you chosing the turnkey, converged infrastructure way based on a Vblock, because >80% of the technologies used in these solutions are overlapping.
